Originally revolving around the tension between a young noble daughter and her banished older sister, the focus shifted. I am now further developing the visuals alongside the narrative. My goal is to one day turn it into a full-scale animated short story.
Stage 1: Screenplay
Muhon - Final Revision 2.pdf
Muhon - First Script
During the final stages of development, pivotal changes were made to heighten the story’s tension and thematic depth. Initially, Kiyoko was meant to stumble upon Mayumi in an old bar, only to be ambushed by the relentless samurai.
However, a more compelling approach emerged—one that deepened Kiyoko’s vulnerability and Mayumi’s resolve. Instead, Mayumi would be the one to find Kiyoko, who had fled in fear, reinforcing their dynamic without overcomplicating the narrative. The setting shifted from a lively bar to a hauntingly silent, abandoned shrine, where an eerie sense of unease replaced the clinking of glasses. Here, Tokumatsu was no ordinary samurai—he was something far more terrifying. As they passed beneath the torii gate, the air crackled with supernatural energy, and warding sigils erupted into flames, a chilling omen of the powerful spirit now upon them.
The PDF shown here is the first draft of Muhon, written from Kiyoko's perspective. My next goal is to rewrite the script to closely follow Mayumi's journey to rescue her sister from peril.
Stage 2: Early Concepts
"Character Silhouette Concepts"
Sisters, Samurai, and local villagers.
"Hunting Samurai"
The Samurai approaches a tavern in the rain.
Research: Fuedal Japan
During my initial ideations of the plotline, I dove into the historical events in the Edo period in Japan. The title "Muhon" (謀叛) means "rebellious acts" or, more specifically, acts of conspiracy against your country. While not obvious during the story, Mayumi disobeyed her father, the "daimyo" (feudal lord), by searching for her sister, Kiyoko. In desperation to find Kiyoko and punish Mayumi, their father sends Tokumatsu, a seasoned and unknowingly possessed warrior of unnatural skill and stature.
My favorite part of any project is researching the background. By understanding the historical context and characters' personalities, I can accurately determine their actions and develop their responses in real-time.
Stage 3: Visual Development
Stage 4: Storyboards
The Gunpowder Plot
The Gunpowder Plot
A short test I created as an animatic. I created the storyboards using Clip Studio Paint and finalized it in Blender. I mixed an audio clip from Harry Potter with some sound effects. Overall a fun project!
